Why'll I understand the marketing from U2's perspective ( give away the music, pack the stadiums ), I can't help but think of the negative effect this new iTunes/U2 promotion will have on the already distorted views of many of today's modern music consumers.. After reading up on the news it seems to me that Bono, and his band are reinforcing the indie artist killing notion that music today has little, or no monetary value. As an indie singer/songwriter myself, with my little band Private Jones ( shameless plug ), I struggle to find listeners, much less those that are willing to pay for our music, so I can't even dream of giving away an album, and recouping income on a massive stadium world tour….yet.
That said, we do trade our music ( 3 FREE Private Jones tunes) on the Private Jones home page for a simple e-mail in the hope that we can interest you, the music fan in our future releases (www.privatejones.com ).
So, if you are considering downloading your free U2 album on iTunes, and why not you're not hurting Bono and the boys, consider clicking thru to the Private Jones page when you're done, and get some of our music too. Maybe Bono doesn't need the money, but I've still got bills to pay.
FTR, I'm waiting for the physical release of the new U2 in October before I get my own copy.
peace,
David
